Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NREMT ?
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is the national certifying body for EMS professionals in the United States. It administers cognitive (written) and psychomotor (skills) examinations to certify EMT-Basics, Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics.
How many questions are on the NREMT congnitive exam ?
The NREMT uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). The EMT exam has a minimum of 70 and maximum of 120 questions. The Paramedic exam ranges from 80 to 150 questions. Testing stops when the computer determines your competency with 95% confidence.
How long do i have to complete the exam ?
EMT candidates have 2 hours to complete the exam. AEMT candidates have 2.5 hours. Paramedic candidates are allotted 2.5 hours. The timer starts once you begin the exam, not while reviewing instructions.
How is the NREMT exam scored ?
The NREMT does not use a traditional percentage score. The CAT system evaluates whether your ability level is above or below the passing standard with 95% confidence. You will receive a pass/fail result along with a diagnostic report showing performance by content area.
How many times can i attempt the NREMT exam ?
You can take the NREMT exam up to 6 times within a 2-year eligibility window. After 3 failures, you must provide documentation of additional education before retesting. After 6 failures, you must re-complete an accredited EMS education program.
What topics are covered on the EMT exam ?
The NREMT EMT cognitive exam covers: Airway/Respiration/Ventilation (18–22%), Cardiology/Resuscitation (20–24%), Trauma (14–18%), Medical/Obstetrics/Gynecology (27–31%), and EMS Operations (10–14%).
How do i register for the NREMT exam ?
After completing an accredited EMS program, your instructor submits your application to NREMT. You then create an account at nremt.org, pay the $80 registration fee, and schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.
What is the pass rate for the NREMT EMT exam ?
First-time pass rates for the NREMT EMT exam are approximately 70–75%. Pass rates improve significantly with consistent practice testing. Studies show candidates who complete 500+ practice questions have substantially higher pass rates.
